Ouidah is known for its role in the Atlantic slave trade. The Slave Route, a path along which slaves were taken to join ships, is lined with monuments and leads to the “Gate of No Return”, a memorial arch on the waterfront. The Ouidah History Museum, housed in a Portuguese fort, relates the slave trade in the city.
